The Swiss National Bank (SNB) is organising a research conference on the challenges faced by central banks in the current environment on 24-25 September 2021.


Conditions permitting, the conference will be held in Zurich, Switzerland. The SNB is monitoring pandemic developments very carefully with regard to the best course of action to
take for this event. The Organising Committee will decide on the form of the event at the latest at the end of July.


The conference provides a forum for discussing a wide range of theoretical and empirical issues related to monetary policy. Some of the topics that contributions to the conference might
address include (but are not restricted to):
• interactions between monetary and fiscal policy
• consequences for monetary and fiscal policy of high government and private debt
• consequences of central banks’ balance sheet expansion
• exchange rate fluctuations and monetary policy
• monetary policy in a “lower-for-longer” interest rate environment
• effects of negative interest rates on the macroeconomy and financial stability
• structural and policy-related inflation risks
• inflation dynamics in a low inflation environment
• the limits of monetary policy


Conference participants are invited to attend the lecture in the «Karl Brunner Distinguished Lecture Series» to be delivered by Carmen Reinhart on 23 September 2021.


Those interested in presenting their work at this conference should email a PDF file with a draft or detailed abstract of their paper to the organizing committee at by March 22, 2021. Please mention whether or not you would like your paper to be also considered for a poster session. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by end of April.

A conference volume will not be published. Transportation and accommodation expenses will be covered for presenters and discussants. Past conference programs can be found at SNB Research Conference.
