PhD Research Fellow (75%) in the field of Development Economics

The new Chair of Development Economics (Prof. Dr. Andreas Landmann, starting in April 2020) at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is looking for a qualified candidate with a research interest in development economics from April 1, 2020 onwards. This is a 75% position (3,75 weekly teaching hours) and limited to three years with the option of renewal.

 

Job Description:

  • Independent research and participation in the Chair’s research projects
  • Presentation of ongoing research at international conferences and preparation for publication in leading academic journals
  • Teaching at the Institute of Economics, particularly in support of classes offered by the Chair
  • Support with the supervision of students and organizational tasks of the Chair

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A university degree (graduate or Master’s degree) in Economics or another relevant discipline (e.g., Political Science or Statistics) with the overall grade “good” or better
  • Strong interest in development economics, in particular in the research areas of the Chair
  • Good  knowledge of empirical methods and relevant statistical software (e.g., Stata, R)
  • Willingness to travel to low-income countries for field research (corresponding experience is a plus) 
  • Aptitude to acquire further software skills (e.g. survey coding, GIS software)
  • Strong writing and communication skills in English
  • German language skills are a plus

 

The development and implementation of a PhD project in one of the research areas of the professorship and the participation in the Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (http://www.bgpe.de) are desired. The Chair has a strong focus on the empirical analysis of individual behavior in the areas of risk and insurance, health, and pro-social preferences. This regularly involves running randomized control trials (RCTs) and behavioral experiments in the field. Currently, many projects are running in Pakistan, but field activities also take place in other countries of South and South-East Asia, as well as in Sub-Saharan Africa.
