Abstract:

This session will present facts on the female shares at different career stages in the economics profession. For Germany, these will come from a first status report conducted among German universities by the VfS, and from an analysis of the development of shares of female researchers and research output based on the Forschungsmonitoring over the past 15 years. This will be complemented by time-series evidence from the US, where regular status reports have been published for decades by the American Economic Association's CSWEP, documenting a leaky pipeline with respect to female researchers in economics. In a panel discussion, the session will explore causes of the underrepresentation of women in the profession.

Panel discussion:

Judith Chevalier (Yale University and CSWEP)
Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln (Verein für Socialpolitik/Goethe-Universität Frankfurt)
Isabel Schnabel (European Central Bank)
Jan-Egbert Sturm (ETH Zurich)
