The Centre for Regional and Innovation Economics (CRIE) organizes an international workshop on "Artificial Intelligence – Between Panacea and Skynet", taking place in Bremen (Germany) on September 26-28, 2019.

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together scholars from different fields to discuss the development and drivers of AI, the economic effects of it and the potential of usage of AI techniques in innovation science.

In particular, we are interested in contributions, which deal with the following questions:

  • How is AI embedded in technological space? Is AI a driving force or obstacle for incumbent technologies?
  • Who are the main actors/drivers of AI?
  • How can regional clusters and their environment act as a driver for AI development and implementation?
  • Which role do international R&D cooperation play for the production and implementation of AI?
  • Is AI a driver for radical innovations and regional structural change?
  • Are AI approaches included in strategies for smart specialization and if so, how?
  • What are the potentials and limitations for the usage of AI techniques in innovation economics?
  • Which attitude can be observed in the population concerning AI?
  • How can AI be implemented and used in innovation economics?
  • How and to what extent should or should not policy support AI?
